What makes a successful business? And once it is successful, how do you keep it that way?
On the 28th of August the BBC interviewed UK Connect’s Managing Director, PJ Farr, for their series on BBC News called CEO Secrets.
CEO Secrets is a gold mine for anyone interested in business, as CEO’s from businesses of all different shapes and sizes share their best advice. Other businesses that are featured in the series range from a start-up offering on-site childcare in the office as a way of boosting productivity and motivation, and an events company making it easier for young black professionals to network.
The concept is straightforward, as a CEO is asked by the interviewer the single question – “What is the advice you wish you’d had when you started out?” Each video lasts on average 50 seconds, and answers range from “hire people who disagree with you” to “treat your customers as all-knowing.”
PJ Farr, who started out as an infantryman in the British Army before setting up his own business, answered the question by advising that sticking to your niche is extremely important. He urges other business-owners not to be afraid of it, and even to prioritise it over the temptation to leap into other markets.
PJ imparted the wisdom that stepping out of your niche can be fatal. From experience, catering to a specific sector in the industry was the driver of success for his own company, UK Connect.
PJ admits that in the past it was tempting for him to stray into the mass market, selling his service to businesses such as retail parks, leisure centres and festivals. But sticking to his unique slice of the sector not only saved his brand identity, it saved the business itself.

The inspiration behind the company’s USP came from PJ’s time in the British Army, where he observed how strategic communications could be deployed onto the most remote areas with hardly any forward planning – yet many seemingly well-established spots in the UK suffered from excruciatingly slow internet, if any at all. This would prove to be especially damaging where large- scale operations were taking place, such as those engineered by construction companies, as noted by PJ’s father-in-law, a housing developer.
PJ’s time on CEO Secrets has been a glimpse into what it looks like to be involved with the UK’s No.1 supplier of internet connectivity to the construction industry.
