UK Connects PJ Farr featured in BBC CEO Secrets

What makes a successful business? And once it is successful, how do you keep it that way?

On the 28th of August the BBC interviewed UK Connect’s Managing Director, PJ Farr, for their series on BBC News called CEO Secrets.

CEO Secrets is a gold mine for anyone interested in business, as CEO’s from businesses of all different shapes and sizes share their best advice. Other businesses that are featured in the series range from a start-up offering on-site childcare in the office as a way of boosting productivity and motivation, and an events company making it easier for young black professionals to network.

The concept is straightforward, as a CEO is asked by the interviewer the single question – “What is the advice you wish you’d had when you started out?” Each video lasts on average 50 seconds, and answers range from “hire people who disagree with you” to “treat your customers as all-knowing.”

So what is this CEO’s secret?

PJ Farr, who started out as an infantryman in the British Army before setting up his own business, answered the question by advising that sticking to your niche is extremely important. He urges other business-owners not to be afraid of it, and even to prioritise it over the temptation to leap into other markets.

PJ imparted the wisdom that stepping out of your niche can be fatal. From experience, catering to a specific sector in the industry was the driver of success for his own company, UK Connect.

How did this help to create a successful business?

PJ admits that in the past it was tempting for him to stray into the mass market, selling his service to businesses such as retail parks, leisure centres and festivals. But sticking to his unique slice of the sector not only saved his brand identity, it saved the business itself.

This would prove to be especially damaging where large- scale operations were taking place, such as those engineered by construction companies, as noted by PJ’s father-in-law, a housing developer.

Why the Internet of Things is the future for construction sites

Providing super-fast reliable broadband on a construction site from day one is more vital than ever. It’s not just about making it possible to communicate with head office, order supplies and get the sales & marketing suite up and running. Rapidly advancing technology is opening up endless opportunities for the housebuilding industry, together with every other business, to work more effectively, efficiently and safely.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming the way broadband internet and Wi-Fi is used. Explained simply, IoT is made up of devices that connect to the internet and share data with each other. ‘Devices’ can mean anything – not just computers, laptops and smartphones, but any object that has been fitted with a chip to gather and transfer data over the internet, from household devices such as washing machines and hair dryers to machinery.

  • In Building Information Modelling, sensors can be integrated into the 3D model of the building to create data that models energy usage, the impact of temperature and much more. When the model is changed, all other plans affected are instantly updated too
  • Construction machinery with a wireless connection can be managed remotely and operate alone in areas that are dangerous for workers
  • Safety can be increased by alerting workers walking through construction site that a piece of equipment is about to drive by
  • Equipment loss on site is a major cost; equipment fitted with sensors can be tracked to prevent it being lost or stolen
  • Sensors in machinery can detect and communicate when maintenance is needed and therefore prolong working life 
  • IoT can be incorporated into the design of homes, for example by shutting down non-essential systems automatically when a house is unoccupied or automatically opening windows to natural light
  • Sensors in a building can relay information on how the materials perform in different temperatures and over time, allowing this knowledge to be built into the next project.

IoT is disrupting the construction industry

As well as enhancing efficiency and safety, information gathered via sensors sets the scene for the ability to use big data – machine learning and artificial intelligence. This assists the planning of future projects, and enables housebuilders to make more accurate predictions of every aspect of the project, from finances to the resources required.

Furthermore, from a marketing perspective, being able to use drones to capture time-lapse footage of schemes being constructed is a brilliant calling card for surveyors and agents.

UK Connect partner with COINS to provide Wi-Fi at User Conference 2019

UK Connect provided Wi-Fi access for the third year in a row at the COINS User Conference this month in Manchester.

The conference provided seminars and workshops on how the COINS construction software and other partnering technologies can help businesses become more productive, collaborative and agile.  

Thought leadership sessions were led by COINS Chief Technology Officer, Development Director, Delivery Director, lead consultants and other specialists. Topics explored the future of the construction industry as seen by external advisers to the industry.  

Connecting the conference

Connectivity at the conference allowed for streaming of the seminars to multiple locations and to over 400+ industry leading housebuilders, including Avant Homes, Barratt Developments, Bovis Homes, Cameron Homes, Gleeson Homes, Keepmoat Homes, Taylor Wimpey and many more  

UK Connect are already a technology partner of many of these top homebuilders and hoped to both impress new clientele, building on existing relationships. Their specialist broadband and telephony services are now on thousands of UK construction sites and sales offices. 

As well as some fascinating seminars and talks from industry experts, there was a range of interesting stands and new technology to experience.

We’re thrilled to share with everyone that UK Connect has won top prize in the Business of the Year – Scale Up category – at the Soldiering On Awards 2019.

P J Farr, managing director of UK Connect, was presented with the award by Helen Helliwell, Director of the Armed Forces People Policy, Ministry of Defence, at an award ceremony on Friday 5th April. The event was held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel and hosted by TV personality Carol Vorderman and former Royal Marine Commando, LCpl John-James ‘JJ’ Chalmers.

PJ says:

As a former member of the Armed Forces, I am inspired daily by the diverse and dedicated people who support the Armed Forces.
