The Challenge
One of Landmarc’s most unique destinations is Tregantle Fort – a fort based just over the Tamar bridge near Plymouth, Cornwall. Originally built between 1858 and 1865 to provide defence of Whitsand Bay beach from the French Navy, the fort now provides a training environment for the MOD and houses the working offices for the Landmarc team who manage and maintain the site. Due to its location on the seafront, listed status and material the building is made from (solid stone that can be several feet tall in places), Tregantle Fort brought about many unique challenges when it came to modern connectivity.
As this environment was reliant upon wired solutions for voice and data, any move to more remote processes would prove to be a challenge and the Landmarc team often found it impossible to make calls from within the walls of their office, affecting their ability to communicate fully and effectively with customers and colleagues alike.
The Solution
To enable Landmarc’s team to keep in communication with both internal and external parties, UK Connect first undertook a site survey so that we could build our knowledge of the existing connectivity infrastructure and then use our expertise to identify the best solution to help overcome the challenges posed.
After receiving the results, we concluded that a Cel-Fi mobile phone booster was the best option for this site. Cel-Fi is an industry-leading company that solves connectivity problems caused by modern – and on this occasion, Napoleonic – building designs and poor coverage areas. Powering our In-Building Mobile Coverage, their built-in technology prevents mobile interference.
With limited space to drill, install cable routes or mount antennas within the fort itself, our engineers had to ensure that this solution would not interfere with any existing ship-to-shore radio services. After we gained permission from Historic England to mount an antenna to a mast, we were able to begin the installation – resulting in the Landmarc team enjoying reliable mobile communications inside their building for the first time.
This, in turn, provided more flexibility for the team and essential redundancy for their fixed telephone lines, significantly improving Landmarc’s business continuity. Being able to communicate within the walls of their office has also helped improve employee morale and productivity as there is now no need to continuously step outside just to make a simple phone call.
