UK Connect was approached by partners Community Matters Partnership Program (CMPP) with an exciting opportunity to help local Southwood Infant School kick start their spring clean blitz and tackle overdue outdoor maintenance.
Ten members of the UK Connect Team quickly came forward to offer their services and smashed all tasks that were thrown their way. The school was overjoyed with the result of everyone’s hard work and the complete transformation of the grounds in preparation for outdoor learning this summer.
Southwood Infant School in Farnborough, Hampshire applied for help via the CMPP website for a Community Action Day that was originally booked in for the end of last year but was unfortunately postponed due to lockdown. They had a list of manual outdoor tasks that they needed help executing to accommodate the children who have now returned to school. Completion was vital to enable pupils to get back out amongst nature and boost their learning experience.

On Wednesday the 21st of April, UK Connect were greeted at the school gates by CMPP and a member of staff from Southwood who proposed the plan of action to the volunteers. Tasks included weeding, planting and pruning the flower beds, sanding down and repainting benches as well as sorting through the compost bins. Without a cloud in sight and fueled by an assortment of tea, coffee and biscuits provided by CMPP, the team split up and got stuck in. UK Connect managed to complete all duties and more, transforming the schools “Wooded Walk” and outdoor areas in time for Summer.
“The Community Action Day at Southwood Infant School was absolutely brilliant! Everyone put so much effort in and worked so hard, the school were both thrilled and impressed with the work that we managed to get done with such a hard-working team.”
Rachel Austen, Corporate Volunteer Coordinator at CMPP.
Every volunteer thoroughly enjoyed getting out in the sunshine and giving back to the local community. It’s both rewarding and fulfilling to volunteer and UK Connect are looking forward to the next Community action day with CMPP.
“My experience of volunteering at Southwood infant school was fabulous, it was good to be doing something that really helped a local school and made the school environment even better for the young minds that attend the school. I spent the day doing a variety of jobs which included planting, painting outside furniture and the dreaded moss removal, which definitely helped get rid of my bingo wings. I felt very positive after completing the day and would be happy to volunteer again, giving time to help the local community gives you a really good feeling and I highly recommend anybody to do it. Thanks to UK Connect for encouraging your staff to take part and supporting the community.”
