06 February 2023
You may be aware it’s the 20th anniversary of Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 7th February, 2023 but do you know the reasons why it is celebrated?
Launched in 2003, Safer Internet Day was set up by the UK Safer Internet Centre (UKSIC) – a global partnership made up of the charities Childnet, Internet Watch Foundation and SWGfL – with the intention to make the Internet a safer place for everyone and to encourage users to browse responsibly. Celebrated by organisations all around the world, it aims to raise awareness of how everyone of every age can contribute to a better and safer online community.
Acting as a bridge between government, industry, law enforcement and society, UKSIC helps to identify threats and harmful online content, offering advice, education and interventions that keep everyone safe and helping to make the internet a great place for collaboration and community. This is summed up by their strapline: ‘Together for a better Internet’.
The theme for 2023 is ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online’. This is designed to encourage children and young people to talk more openly and honestly about their use of the internet and the things they come across that raise red flags or could potentially put them in danger. From dealing with trolls and abuse to scammers security and social media, it’s all about staying safe online. As well as the dangers posed by others, there’s also an encouragement for these young users to ‘think before you click’ as they learn to use digital technology responsibly, putting respect and safety at the forefront of their actions.
It’s important that those most vulnerable to online abuse are given a voice – and listened to – and Safer Internet Day ensures they have just that. Once UKSIC has gathered this feedback, they can take it to the relevant parties to ensure everyone can be part of a safer online community.
