TeenTech: Inspiring our future technologists, scientists and engineers

Founded in 2008, TeenTech events are an inspirational way to get involved and make a difference in young people’s future career choices in science, engineering and technology.
TeenTech events engage with up to 300 students, aged 12-13, from multiple secondary schools across the area. The students are taken out of school for a day to learn about the very real career opportunities available to them if they select STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) subjects for their GCSEs.

Getting kids connected

UK Connect challenged the students on what they knew about the internet and how it works. With many kids learning how to use the Internet at such a young age, we believe it’s important that they learn how it actually works behind the scenes and just how amazing the technology is that transfers millions of bytes of data in milliseconds that gets their favourite YouTube channel showing.

After a quick lesson in how routers work the students were challenged to build a router with the fastest teams demonstrating how quick a connection can be made. Our “engineers” for the day were fantastic and all managed to build their routers in under 3 minutes. By the end of the session the students were able to explain back to us what a router is, how data is transferred and what the difference is between mobile broadband and fixed lines.

We are dedicated to encouraging and inspiring the younger generation to get involved in STEM from a young age - TeenTech events are a great opportunity to engage with the students and make them aware not just how fun technology can be, but what career choices are available to them.

Engaging students to think about careers in technology

The UK Connect team were really impressed with the students ability to quickly absorb the technical information presented to them and apply it (if not competitively) to real life scenarios. Many of the students were engaging and quizzed us on our own personal careers in technology and how they could follow their own path in the industry. We are inspired that these students represent the future knowledge for the industry and look forward to seeing what they will bring to further develop the technology sector.

Inspiring ambition in the younger years for the future of technology

As recruitment of technical skills is getting more difficult, UK Connect are dedicated to inspiring the younger generation to explore careers in tech. There are few opportunities to demonstrate and convince students about the exciting and rewarding careers available in science, technology and engineering, so this event is really key in allowing the younger generation to explore the opportunities by speaking to industry experts and learning from real world scenarios on the day.
