UK Connect and Landmarc signal change for the Armed Forces

Today, UK Connect, the construction communications specialist, announces its pivotal role in a special communications project for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).

Working with long-time partner Landmarc Support Services (Landmarc), UK Connect implemented enhanced broadband infrastructure and services at DIO’s Halton Training Camp, a key asset in the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) Covid-19 strategic response.

The technology provider’s work is directly supporting the military’s role in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.

Signalling Issues

Landmarc were originally approached by DIO to prepare Halton Camp in readiness for the arrival of reservist troops embarking on essential training in the fight against Covid-19. As well as ensuring all basic facilities were prepared in time, the international provider of integrated training and sustainable infrastructure solutions wanted to ensure effective internet services. This was seen as an essential consideration for personnel who would be spending a long period away from home.

Located on the MOD’s Defence Training Estate in Lancashire, Halton Training Camp, similar to a number of military sites across the UK, suffered from slow and outdated wireless capabilities. A geographically awkward location, at the base of a valley, exacerbated the problem further. The issue had the potential to negatively impact morale, DIO and Landmarc knew it had to act quickly to address the problem.

Rapid Response

To achieve the objective of exponentially boosting capacity and improving connectivity across the site, Landmarc approached UK Connect. Only two days later, the camp was fully operational with reliable, unrestricted broadband and Wi-Fi access for every reservist on site.

Having served in the British Army, I am acutely aware of the importance of secure and reliable communications links. This becomes even more of a priority for personnel on long-term deployment, away from family and friends. When we arrived on site, broadband capabilities were a tiny 5Mbps, completely inadequate to sustain the communication needs of Halton’s personnel. This poor connectivity was not only impacting personal requirements, but also professional, slowing down important day-to-day training for the troops.

He continues, “Working closely with Landmarc we approached this project in the same way one would a strategic military communication deployment. Many of the challenges were similar to those faced in our usual work of connecting construction sites so we were able to implement tried and tested solutions. We worked quickly, with an expert team of engineers, installing a secure, scalable and reliable broadband infrastructure in only 12 hours to an army camp with only 48hrs notice. Halton now operates with a 70Mbps capacity, perfect for work, rest and play across the camp.”

We’ve supported UK Connect since the business began in 2013. The military background of founder, PJ Farr, membership of the Military Covenant and ability to deliver rapid mobile communication infrastructure made it the perfect choice to help us deploy an effective solution to improve the welfare of our Armed Forces using the camp to train.

Morale Boost

According to one member of site personnel, “I use Wi-Fi constantly, up to this point, I’ve had no loss of connection, whilst using multiple device. Having such a reliable service has massively boosted the morale of soldiers on site as it has made communications with friends and family so much easier. I now feel very confident I can chat with my family 24hrs a day, which is hugely reassuring as I don’t know how long my absence from home will continue.

PJ concludes, “The success of our work at Halton Camp has further cemented our relationship with Landmarc. We’ll continue to work with them on other, similar projects going forward. We’re extremely proud to have been able to support the DIO, MOD and important work being done by many brave member of the Armed Forces are undertaking to combat COVID-19.”
