How will our cities look in 2050?

As society increasingly moves toward a more data-driven landscape,

advanced technology will start to become essential to how we live day to day.

Extending from the most mundane, regular tasks, to the complex and exceptional, digital innovation will help enhance our professional and personal lives, particularly in urban areas.

The Smart City concept

Where once, Futurists talked about the ‘Smart Cities’ concept, this type of infrastructure is now becoming a reality, particularly thanks to significant advances in connectivity capability. Fundamentally, in order to be a true ‘Smart City’ project, robust connectivity is crucial to effective operation of the thousands of IoT capable devices which punctuate them. This requires seamless, ultra-fast public Wi-Fi, universally across the development. The good news is the upcoming rollout of 5G, complemented with Wi-Fi 6 and existing 4G LTE, will enable these cities of the future to become reality. It will allow for myriad AI-backed systems to make urban areas safer, pleasanter and more intuitive to the needs of its population.

The development of Smart Cities

For example, Cities in 2050 will see a greater reliance on intelligent road systems and public safety monitoring systems. At home, we’ll see an increasing use of ‘network bubbles’, which allow residents to move freely around a complex whilst remaining connected at all times. Greater connectivity will also bring smart vehicles and machinery onto the mainstream, improving efficiencies across the board.  Further, our growing reliance on analytics will also see the development of tech that can merge sustainability goals with economic goals, such as applications monitoring energy usage to reduce bills and the amount of CO2 emissions we produce.  What’s clear is that if we’re to achieve our ambitions of a digital utopia, the UK must act fast to supercharge our connectivity infrastructure or risk hindering progress.
